Meet Resident Complex Graphics Designer, Beauty Blogger and creative director Farzana.
How do you define the role of a ‘free thinker’ in the design industry, and how has this mindset contributed to your success?
As a free thinker, I view my role in the design industry as one that challenges the norm and brings fresh perspectives to conventional ideas. This mindset has allowed me to approach projects with an open mind and create innovative solutions. It’s the backbone of my creative process, pushing boundaries and exploring uncharted territories in design.
Can you share a specific instance where inspiration struck you from an unlikely source?
One memorable instance was during a quiet walk in the park, where the way sunlight filtered through the leaves inspired a color palette for a project I was working on. This moment reinforced my belief that inspiration can come from the most mundane experiences, from the textures of urban architecture to the laughter of my nephew. Every detail of life can spark creativity.
Your career highlight includes creative direction for Miss Marvel in London. Can you walk us through the creative process behind this project?
The creative process for Miss Marvel was such an amazing project, I creative directed the London premiere content with MuslimSisterhood an empowering female collective and. It began with deep research into the character’s background, cultural significance, and the story’s setting. This project was really important to me also being a British Muslim female to have such a significant role pushed by Disney it was something i was proud to be apart of. My approach was to blend these elements with contemporary design principles to create visuals that resonated with both fans and newcomers. Collaborating with a talented team, we aimed to celebrate diversity and empowerment through our creative choices.
What does the concept of ‘there’s more to come’ signify in your career journey?
This phrase encapsulates my belief in continuous growth and exploration in my career. Despite my past achievements, I always see them as stepping stones to further innovation and creativity. It’s a reminder to myself and others that the journey of a designer is never complete; there are always new challenges to tackle and new heights to achieve.
How have the communities and networks you’ve built influenced your design work?
The communities and networks I’ve built have been invaluable. They’ve provided a support system, a source of inspiration, and a forum for exchanging ideas. Collaborating and networking with diverse talents have enriched my work, introducing me to new concepts and pushing me to expand my creative horizons.
Can you share an example of how a small detail in everyday life led to a breakthrough in one of your projects?
In one project, a pattern I noticed on the pavement inspired a breakthrough in a branding project. This pattern, which most would overlook, gave me the idea for a unique design motif that became central to the brand’s visual identity. It’s a testament to how the smallest details can lead to significant creative breakthroughs.
What advice would you give to aspiring designers about finding inspiration and staying innovative?
My advice is to remain curious and open to the world around you. Inspiration can come from anywhere, so never limit yourself to traditional design sources. Experiment, explore different cultures, art forms, and even scientific phenomena. Innovation lies at the intersection of diverse ideas and experiences.
Looking back, which project challenged you the most, and what did you learn from it?
The Miss Marvel project was particularly challenging due to its cultural and narrative depth. It taught me the importance of cultural sensitivity, thorough research, and the power of storytelling in design. I learned that challenging projects often lead to the most growth, both personally and professionally.
Name some of your favorite projects
There are so many! Here’s a few Disney Miss Marvel Creative Direction, Glossier my favourite global beauty brand, a billboard campaign for the National Health Service promoting South Asian female health care. These are my most recent!
As someone who’s worked across diverse fields, from Disney to Glossier, how do you adapt your design philosophy to fit the unique needs of each brand?
My design philosophy revolves around understanding the core essence of each brand. This involves deep research and immersion into the brand’s values, audience, and goals. From there, it’s about creatively expressing these elements in a way that’s authentic to the brand while also pushing creative boundaries. Each brand presents a new canvas and a new set of possibilities, which is what makes this work so exciting.
