Hermès Sets a New Benchmark in Women’s Watches
In the illustrious arena of luxury watchmaking, Hermès stands out not only for its unparalleled craftsmanship but also for its innovative approach to timepiece design. The French luxury house, renowned for its exquisite leather goods, has made significant strides in the watch industry since the successful debut of its H08 sports range in 2021. Building on this momentum, Hermès unveiled its latest marvel, “The Cut,” at the Watches and Wonders show in Geneva, marking its most pivotal women’s watch line launch in over a decade.
A Strategic Move into the Mainstream
With “The Cut,” Hermès aims to capture the essence of daily sophistication through a mechanical sports watch designed specifically for women. This launch seeks to mirror the success of the H08, Hermès’ first major hit in the men’s watch segment, which was acclaimed for its distinctive design marrying a circular face with a nearly square case. According to Laurent Dordet, CEO of Hermès Horloger, this strategic expansion into women’s watches addresses a gap in their collection while aiming to balance the gender split among its clientele.

Design Meets Geometry
The creativity behind “The Cut” stems from its unique case design – a circle within a round shape, offering a fresh perspective on traditional watch geometry. Hermès offers four variants of “The Cut”: steel, two-tone steel and rose gold, with options for an embellished bezel featuring 56 natural diamonds, catering to diverse preferences and styles.
Growth and Challenges Ahead
The introduction of “The Cut” comes on the heels of sustained growth within Hermès’ watch division, with sales soaring to €611 million in 2023. This surge is attributed not just to innovative products like the H08 but also to the brand’s increasing desirability and strategic focus on mechanical watchmaking. Hermès’ ventures into higher-end timepieces featuring handcrafted dials underscore its commitment to differentiation and excellence in a market dominated by established watchmakers.
Expanding Hermès’ Legacy in Watchmaking
Under Dordet’s leadership, Hermès Horloger has seen remarkable advancements, including the adoption of in-house movements H1912 and H1837, which have enabled the production of more technically sophisticated watches. As Hermès continues to solidify its reputation as a serious contender in the watchmaking industry, the launch of “The Cut” represents a significant step towards appealing to a broader audience and cementing its place in the luxury watch market.
Looking Forward
With aspirations to climb the ranks among Swiss watchmakers, Hermès is poised for further growth and innovation. While the luxury house faces challenges, including competitive pressures and evolving consumer tastes, its focus on unique design, craftsmanship, and storytelling sets it apart. As Hermès expands its watch collection and explores new frontiers in design and technology, “The Cut” stands as a testament to the brand’s enduring legacy and its future potential in the world of luxury timepieces.
